How to use the Random Letter Generator
Choose a filter — All letters, Vowels only (A, E, I, O, U), or Consonants only — then press Pick a letter. The result animates into the display with the letter's position in the alphabet and whether it's a vowel or consonant. Press again for a new letter.
Games and activities that use random letters
- →Name That Thing — pick a letter, then everyone races to name an animal, country, food (or any category) starting with that letter. First person to call one out wins the round.
- →Alphabet challenges — generate a letter and challenge players to think of 5 words in that category within 30 seconds.
- →Scrabble and word game warm-ups — pick a random letter and practice finding words that start with, end with, or contain it.
- →Classroom alphabet activities — teachers use random letters for phonics drills, spelling practice, and vocabulary exercises.
- →Creative writing prompts — start every character name, place name, or story element with the same random letter for a constrained writing challenge.
Vowels vs. consonants
The alphabet has 5 vowels and 21 consonants. Vowels-only mode is useful for games that need common letters to keep things accessible. Consonants-only mode is better for harder word challenges since consonants are generally trickier starting points.
