Strategy: is there a winning move?
Against a truly random opponent there is no winning strategy — your long-term win rate will converge toward 33%. However, against human opponents, research shows some tendencies:
- →Rock is the most popular first throw, especially among male players. Starting with paper gives you an edge.
- →After a win, most players unconsciously repeat the same move. After a loss, they tend to switch.
- →Scissors is thrown least often — which means paper is slightly safer than average against human opponents.
When to use Rock Paper Scissors
The classic use is settling a two-person dispute or deciding who goes first — faster than flipping a coin and more satisfying since it involves a choice. Use the Coin Flip tool if you want a pure 50/50 random result instead.
